Personal Safety & Security
There are several different ways to keep yourself safe and secure for every type of situation or condition you might encounter. These tips work well both on and off campus, and are quite easy to practice.
BASIC STREET SAFETY
1. When walking any place on or off campus keep alert.
2. Trust your instincts. If something looks out of place or you feel uncomfortable, trust yourself and proceed to a well light public place. If it looks or feels suspicious it probably is.
3. Get to know the campus, where are the emergency phones, what buildings are open after hours, and where help might be located.
4. Get to know surrounding areas, What businesses are open late, where help might be located, where is the police station.
5. Walk calm, confident, collected.
6. Never take short cuts, well lit and populated areas serve as a deterrent to crime.
7. Travel in groups are also a good deterrent.
8. Late night hours find you working or studying late ? Use walk program.
9. Never hitchhike.
10. If you find yourself in a robbery situation remember, property can be replaced but not you, give it to them.
SAFETY FOR JOGGERS AND WALKERS
1. Try to avoid going out late nights alone.
2. Let someone know where you are going and when they can expect you back.
3. Know your route and surroundings.
4. Stay in well traveled, well lit, and populated areas.
5. Cary identification.
6. Wear reflective materials.
7. Be confident, and collected.
8. If you have a cell phone, make sure it has charge before you leave.
9. Dress for the conditions.
10. Never carry large amounts of cash or display valuables.
