FALL 2007 EDITION

Greetings Parents!

The last few weeks have been very exciting as we have welcomed the Class of 2011 to Saint Michaels’ College in August and inaugurated our 16th president, Dr. John (Jack) Neuhauser during our recent Homecoming and Family Weekend. Many of you attended these emotional and historic events and witnessed the special way in which the Saint Michael’s community’s reaches out to new students and their parents and how the College celebrates its history and traditions. For those of you who did come to campus, I hope that you enjoyed some private time as a family. For those of you who were unable to come, please know that you are welcome on campus anytime.

In this issue of Parent Talk, you’ll find a profile of an amazing student, Brandon Beaudoin ’08. You’ll also find an interview with Grace Kelly ’81 our new director of student activities and assistant dean. We also like to hear feedback about Parent Talk and Family Weekend so please feel free to email us.

Enjoy the photos and have a great fall!

Sincerely,

New student activities director hopes parents will share ideas
by Mark Tarnacki
Staff Writer

“We always love to hear from parents with suggestions they have,” says Grace Kelly ‘81, the College’s new director of student activities. Kelly, who took the reins from her popular long-serving predecessor and friend Jennie Cernosia this summer, said she is excited to be leading an office and programming that already were running like “a well-oiled machine.”

As an example of feedback that she values, Kelly recounted a recent call from a parent who expressed a preference for Family Weekends in the spring rather than fall – something that’s been tried in past years with positive response, though this year’s fall event had its advantages and supporters too, she said.

Spotlight on Brandon Beaudoin '08
by Mark Tarnacki
Staff Writer

It was a pretty typical Wednesday for Beaudoin, an aspiring oral surgeon who holds down a 3.87 Grade Point Average (GPA) and has been a four-year starting varsity defender for the Purple Knights. His hard work is paying off. Last spring Beaudoin became the first Saint Michael’s student-athlete ever to be named a First-Team Academic-All American, a prestigious national honor.

While Beaudoin welcomes the recognition, he says he’s more about team, friends and family than individual honors. For him, the best prizes would be an NE-10 Conference championship this year and admission to one of New England’s top dental schools.

The inauguration of Saint Michael's 16th president
by Buff Lindau
Director of Public Relations and Communications

Dr. John J. Neuhauser, former professor and academic vice president at Boston College, joins the Saint Michael’s community this fall as Saint Michael’s sixteenth president. His inauguration celebrations on September 29th include an Inaugural Liturgy, the Inauguration Ceremony and celebratory dinner that evening.

Dr. Neuhauser comes to Saint Michael’s College with a great deal of experience having served as dean of faculties of Boston College from 1999 to 2005, and, from 1977 to 1999, as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. Most recently, Dr. Neuhauser served on Saint Michael’s Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2007.

Jack Neuhauser
Dr. John Neuhauser
President of Saint Michael's College

He considers Saint Michael’s “the ideal Catholic liberal arts college.” He applauds the college’s ability to maintain a classical liberal arts curriculum in combination with pre-professional programs. Most schools, he said, have become entirely pre-professional, but this college has a quite traditional sense of literature, history, science, mathematics, and the arts, while providing realistic preparation for the modern world.

Saint Michael's Fund Update

Dr. Steven and Patricia Bookless P'08

Thank you, Dr. Steven and Patricia Bookless P’08 for agreeing to be the co-chairs for current parents and the Saint Michael’s Fund. They are parents of Kim, Michelle and Megan, ’08, from Barrington, RI. Yes, they are triplets! All three young women are active both in and outside of the classroom. If you meet them, please ask them about the “spreadsheet story!” Steven and Patty wanted to be involved in their daughters’ college careers and felt the best way to do that was to take a leadership role as volunteers.

Parent Poem

Rick Down was moved to write a poem for his son, Heath Down ’09, shortly after he left home for his freshman year at Saint Michael’s. Rick submitted the poem as parents he has shared this poem with have related closely to the emotions it expresses; he feels it might give some students a deeper understanding of why their parents get so emotional when they send them off to school.
