Greetings Parents!
Hello from the snow-covered campus of Saint Michael’s College. It is
truly a winter wonderland here. I know that this makes our students
happy as many of them are skiers and snowboarders and have their
special $30 season’s pass to Smugglers' Notch.
In this issue of Parent Talk, you’ll meet
Owen Glubiak ’08, who
is involved with our student government association and the newly
formed Environmental Council. You’ll also be introduced to
Joan
Wagner, a staff member and alumna committed to academic excellence through
service-learning, peer tutoring and writing proficiency. Additionally,
I am excited to announce a recent gift from some parents to establish
an Athletics Endowment. Learn more in the Saint Michael’s Fund Update.
As always, I encourage your comments, feedback and story ideas for
Parent Talk.
Sincerely,
|

Enhancing the
College Learning Experience
by Mark Tarnacki
Staff Writer
|
Many Saint Michael’s students are giving
more of themselves, getting more help from fellow students and
broadening their cultural outlook because of Joan Wagner’s three-pronged
determination to enhance their college learning experience.
Named the college’s coordinator of peer
tutoring, service learning and academic programming this fall, Wagner
has been associated with Saint Michael’s since she started as an
undergraduate in 1989. She said her goal is “to enhance the academic
life of the college through these three interconnected programs.”

Spotlight on Owen Glubiak '08
by Mark Tarnacki
Staff Writer
|
Following his parents’ footsteps to college at Saint Michael’s, Owen
Glubiak ’08 has discovered intriguing paths far from his family’s Ohio
home. He’s gone up and down mountains, across the Pacific and deep into
the worlds of business, student government and environmental activism.
Glubiak knew something about Saint Michael’s from his alumni parents,
William Glubiak ’82 and Jill Dunlop Glubiak ’81, when he started looking at colleges.
Though he doesn’t remember his first campus visit at age three for his
mother’s fifth-year reunion, Glubiak says he grew fond of Vermont later
during family ski trips.

Parent Program Volunteer Opportunities
Who says the students should have all the fun? The Parent Program
offers volunteer opportunities for parents both on and off campus.
Parents who volunteer help further the mission of Saint Michael’s
College through their efforts. It is a great way to meet new
people, make new friends and foster bonds that may last a lifetime!
For more information on these programs,
visit our Parent Page
or contact Terri Selby, Institutional Advancement at 802.654.2462 or

Saint Michael's Fund Update
 |
Thank you, Dr. Steven and Patricia Bookless
P’08 for agreeing to be the co-chairs for current parents and the Saint
Michael’s Fund. They are parents of Kim, Michelle and Megan, ’08, from
Barrington, RI. (Yes, they are triplets!) All three young women are active
both in and outside of the classroom. If you meet them, please ask them
about the “spreadsheet story!” Steven and Patty wanted to be involved in
their daughters’ college careers and felt the best way to do that was to
take a leadership role as volunteers. |

We’re very excited to report that the Saint
Michael’s Department of Athletics received a very generous gift from Saint
Michael’s parents who wish to remain anonymous. This fall, with a
$50,000 stock gift, they created an endowment for Athletics. This
endowment will benefit all student-athletes and will ensure that future
generations of Purple Knights will have the support they need. If you
would like further information on this endowment or would like to make a
contribution toward it, please contact Terri Selby at 802-654-2462 or
tselby@smcvt.edu.
But don't forget, the best way to support Saint Michael's is by making
an unrestricted gift to the Saint Michael's Fund. The Fund helps the
College meet its greatest needs. The most convenient way in which to make a
gift is to go to
the College’s secure online Web site:
www.smcvt.edu/giveback or
call toll-free 888.448.7111. If you have any further questions on
how to make a gift, please do not hesitate to contact me. PLEASE
CONSIDER MAKING YOUR GIFT BY JUNE, 2008.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Katrina Aftermath |
|
|

On Monday, Jan. 21, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day, the Rev. Michael Jacques, S.S.E. of St. Peter Claver Parish,
New Orleans addressed a full chapel and spoke passionately of the
problems and poverty that his parishioners are still living with three
years since Hurricane Katrina.
The MLK Society sponsors a special speaker
to come to campus each year to honor Rev. King’s legacy.

|
|
This summer, Saint Michael’s will host its
Sixth Annual College Exploration Week, June 23-27, 2008.
College Exploration Week provides high school students an opportunity to
live for the week in a residence hall, eat in the Alliot cafeteria,
immerse themselves in college academics, explore Vermont, and more.
Academic program offerings this year are biology, business, creative
writing, and journalism.
If you have a son or daughter or know of someone else who might benefit
from College Exploration Week, please pass this information along.
Siblings of current students who enroll in the program will receive a 15
percent tuition discount.
The deadline to register is May 5, and all the details can be found at
