MLK Jr. Society History

jpeg imageThe Martin Luther King, Jr. Society (MLK) evolved from an idea by two African American students, Renee Dickens and Brian Young in the fall of 1988. Dickens and Young were concerned that there was no organization on the campus to address the issues and problems most relevant to students (however small the number) in the African American community. Michael Samara, Vice-President for Student Affairs and Jennie Cernosia, Director of Student Activities, were supportive of this idea. Therefore, the primary objective was to create an organization that would address and articulate issues relevant to African American students matriculating at Saint Michael’s College. Another reason for creating this organization was to provide a social and cultural outlet for African American students on campus.
