2005 Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program

 

Fellowship Overview:  The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program of the U.S. Department of Education offers graduate fellowships to students who are in their first year of, or who are applying to, full-time doctoral programs or MFA programs in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences.  Awards are made for one year, and are renewable to a maximum of four years, contingent upon the student making satisfactory progress toward the degree.  Each Javits Fellowship offers an award of maximum of $41,511, a portion of which will be paid to the Fellow's institution in lieu of tuition and fees.  Approximately 71 new fellowships will be awarded.

 

Eligibility Overview:  Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the U.S., or citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States who are applying to, or who are currently attending, a graduate program leading to a doctorate or a MFA, but who have not completed more than one year of graduate study.  Students must demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students attending foreign institutions are ineligible. 

 

Eligible Fields Include:  Arts--Art History (including Architectural History), Creative Writing, Music Performance, Theory, Composition, and Literature, Studio Arts (including Photography), Television, Film and Cinematography, Theater Arts, Playwriting, Screenwriting, Acting, and Dance.  Humanities--Archaeology, Area Studies, Classics, Comparative Literature, English Language and Literature, Folklore, Folk Life, Foreign Languages and Literature, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Religion, Speech, Rhetoric, and Debate.  Social Sciences-- Anthropology, Communications and Media, Economics, Ethnic and Cultural Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology*, Public Policy and Public Administration, and Sociology*.

*   Fellowships may not be used for obtaining a Master's Degree or a Ph.D. in clinical psychology or social work.

 

 

Deadlines:      October 8, 2004 for transmittal of applications.

                        January 31, 2004 for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. (FAFSA)
