Diversity Coalition

In his book Postethnic America, David Hollinger notes that although the multiculturalism movement has generally been a powerful and positive force, “It has not provided an orientation toward cultural diversity strong enough to process the current conflicts and convergences that make the problem of boundaries more acute than ever.”

This is the challenge that members of the Diversity Coalition seek to address.  Is it a disservice to our campus and nation to explore diversity exclusively in contexts of race and ethnicity?  Or conversely, when we advocate for an understanding of diversity that is comprehensive and inclusive, are we acknowledging  those who have experienced this nation’s history of oppression, and ignoring the legacy of that history?  What about gender, religion, physical disability, sexual orientation, nationality and other forms of diversity?  If you do not know the answers, but like the questions, this is the club for you.
