We finished another exciting academic year in the mathematics department with the graduation of one of our largest classes in recent history. Our graduates are eager to build on their Saint Michael’s education in future endeavors, ranging from employment in industry to graduate school in various fields (computer science, mathematics, statistics, and education) to medical school.

Eight of our graduates were inducted into the Vermont Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the Honorary National Mathematics Society; three were inducted into the Vermont Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and largest academic honor society; three were inducted into the Vermont Gamma Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Catholic Honor Society; and four completed the Saint Michael’s Honors Program.   • Three students are creating new DNA nanostructure designs in summer research project on campus
This work is supported by grants funded through NASA and the National Institutes of Health.
  • Junior math major spends the summer in NSF-funded math research program at the University of Georgia
Brittany Baker '11 was selected to participate in a competitive program on "The Mathematics of Paper Folding"
  • Two students participate in competitive math research summer program in Texas
Erika Kirslis '12 and Emily Pratt '12 were selected to participate in a program on "Signal and Image Analysis."
  • Graduating senior receives the 2009 Saint Michael's Award
Jonathan Kaptcianos was cited for being a published scholar, student leader, musician and athlete.
  • Students and Faculty participate in April 2009 Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference
Some 150 student researchers from across the Northeast gave presentations.
