It is always a great pleasure to hear
from our alumni, and we often wish our current students and alumni
could meet each other. We hereby launch Res Gestae, an e-newsletter
for students and alumni of the Saint Michael’s College Classics
Department, in the hope of extending the community of Classics
students beyond the curve of the Winooski River and the four
years students spend at Saint Michael's. Please write to us, alumni dilecti. Let us know where you are and what you’re doing now; what
you’re reading and thinking about; what you remember from your years
at Saint Michael's. We will share news of our doings here on
campus…or abroad: we have returnees from Greece and Rome, one in
Italy now, and others planning study in Italy and Scotland next
Fall. We eagerly await your comments and suggestions on what you
read here. Write to us at
cbegley@smcvt.edu.
Happy Reading and Pax vobiscum,
Carol Begley, Ronald Begley, and James Conley |

"Ask
Grammar Dog" |
Rumored to be a world-traveler, and with a past which
(he has claimed) includes Pentagon connections, this
mysterious participial pooch serves the Classics
Department as the scourge of sloppy grammar (and the
fuzzy thinking betrayed by bad grammar). Here Grammar
Dog inaugurates his advice column for Res Gestae.
Please send questions for Grammar Dog to
cbegley@smcvt.edu. |

Dear
Grammar Dog,
Why don’t you wear a toga? -
M. Juan Dring
To Mr. Dring,
Grammar Dog would like to point out that a toga would
almost completely conceal his elegant blue and yellow
stripes and thus create a situation in which it might
not be clear immediately just who he is. He is sure you
can imagine how unfortunate a situation that would be.
He is willing to consider donning a toga, however, for
special departmental functions, if he can find a tailor
up to his exacting demands. |
