LS101 Outcomes

Outcomes based on Standards, Performance Indicators, and Outcomes of the ALA's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education

1. Students demonstrate competency with the LC classification system by locating books by call number and identifying general areas of knowledge within LC

2.  Students search the online catalog by author, title, subject, and keyword

3.  Students practice and develop competency with Boolean searching 

4.  Students successfully select appropriate tools for locating various types of information 

5.  Students knowledgeably select and search appropriate online databases and library catalogs

6.  Students demonstrate appropriate selection, search techniques and intelligent use of the internet

7.  Students design effective research strategies 

8.  Students define copyright and apply copyright and fair use guidelines to their research and writing

10.  Students capably define and recognize examples of plagiarism and make wise choices to avoid plagiarism in their communication of information (writing, PowerPoint, web, oral)

11.  Students demonstrate the correct procedures for documenting print and electronic sources within their papers and bibliographies

12.  Students apply evaluation criteria and methods to select and compare scholarly and non-scholarly sources of information

13.  Students develop and implement critical thinking skills

14.  Students discuss and debate ethical, sociological, and legal issues related to the access of information including such topics as intellectual property, censorship, privacy, technology, and ethics.

15.  Students articulate the relationship of academic disciplines to the research process

16.  Students appropriately select subject and discipline specific databases for their research topics

17.  Students effectively and efficiently retrieve periodical, journal, and newspaper articles, book, videos, microforms, and government documents in various formats.

18.  Students wisely select statistical information and use caution and good judgment incorporating data within their research

19.  Students demonstrate proficiency communicating the information they gather and present in various formats both oral and written
