Superior General
1859-
Physical Description
Arrangement
Arranged into Subgroup by name and/or term of office
History
The Superior General, the highest ordinary authority of the Society,
governs and administers the Society according to Church law and the
Society of Saint Edmund Constitutions. He is elected, along with a
general council, at the Society’s General Chapter. He has charge of
appointments to offices and of assigning each religious to reside in a
house of the Society. It is the duty of the Superior General to promote
the general well being of the Society; to implement Chapter directives; to
judge in matters of controversy; to visit and to be available to members
of the Society; and to fulfill, in the manner prescribed, those duties
specified in Church law and the Constitutions. The Superior General has a
General Council with which he must consult in certain instances indicated
by the SSE Constitutions. The SSE Consitutions also outline other
qualities and conditions that should govern the choice of Superior
General. Terms of office have ranged from two to 6 years and have at
times, been limited in different ways. Some Superiors General have served
for a significant number of years.
Scope
The Superior General record group is divided into subgroups. For
Superiors General before 1930 and after 1990, the subgroups are by name.
From 1930 to 1990, subgroups are by term of office, not name. Since some
Superiors General have served for more than one term, there is more than
one subgroup for some Superiors General.

Pierre Boyer, Superior 1850-1875; Superior General 1876-1892
Fr. Pierre Boyer is considered one
of the founders of the Society of Saint Edmund. Boyer was born at
Noyers, Yonne, France in 1813. While at minor Seminary in Auxerre, he met
Fr. John Baptiste Muard, future founder of the Society. Boyer and Muard
organized a society among the seminarians to encourage Christian
perfection. In 1846, following ten years of service as a parish priest in
Pourrain, he resigned his parish and entered the community of missionaries
at Pontigny. These auxiliary priests preached missions and conducted
retreats throughout the Diocese of Sens. In 1850, after Fr. Muard was
formally installed in the monastery at Pierre Qui Vire, his fellow priests
named Boyer Superior of the community. While Superior, Boyer administered
the formal establishment of the Society as a religious institute on Sept.
29 1852, established the Society’s first seminary, and undertook
restoration of the abbey church at Pontigny. In 1867 following many years
of growth, Boyer was instrumental in the establishment of the Society’s
first new foundation at Mont-Saint-Michel. Boyer directed the
reestablishment of the pilgrimage of St. Edmund at Pontigny and the
pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel, the issuing of the publication Les
Annales du Mont Saint Michel, and the granting of Pontifical Status
for the Society. Upon this establishment, Boyer formally became Superior
General of the Society and oversaw even further growth, particularly in
the area of education. Boyer oversaw establishment of the College De
l’Immaculee Conception, as well as the first foray into America at
Keelers Bay, Vermont. He died Feb. 17, 1892.
The Boyer subgroup consists of one
letter. Other Boyer correspondence may be found in the Historical Files
of the SSEA.

Rev. Paul Laproste 1892-1907
Father Paul Laproste was born in
Ligny-le-Chatel, France. He entered the Society in Pontigny in 1856 and
served most of his years in and around Pontigny. In 1892, following the
death of Fr. Boyer, the 1891 Chapter reconvened and elected him Superior
General.. He served as Superior General until 1907. During his
administration, the Society suffered serious difficulty. France enacted
the Law of Association and all houses of the Society were closed. The
State confiscated the Society’s property, and the members of the Society
dispersed. Laproste oversaw the creation of new foundations in Hitchin,
England and in Swanton, Vermont, as well as the founding of Saint
Michael’s College in Winooski.
This subgroup consists of correspondence and a small file of
Privileges and Dispensations. The correspondence is arranged
chronologically and translations for most are filed at the end of each
year. The translator, who organized and numbered both the letters and
translations, is unknown. Other Laproste correspondence may be found in

Rev. Amand Prével 1907-1912
Fr. Armand Prével was ordained in 1871, following a novitiate at
Pontigny. He was assigned to Mont-Saint-Michel and served as an
instructor at both Mont-Saint-Michel and the College De l’Immaculee
Conception in Laval. In 1893, he founded and was first Superior of
St-Michel de Château-Gontier. In 1895, Fr. Laproste sent him to America
where he assisted Fr. Aubin in setting up the Swanton foundation. He then
returned to France. After expulsion from France under the Laws of
Association, Prével begins the work of founding St. Michael’s School (the
former école apostolique) in Hitchin, England. He then returned to
America where he was instrumental in the first years of the newly formed
Saint Michael’s College at Winooski Park. He served as Superior of the
Vermont House until elected Superior General in 1907. His term of office
was marked by a growth in the Society and creation of the new
Constitutions of the Society, approved in May 1911. He died December 9,
1912.
This subgroup consists of correspondence. Items are filed
chronologically. Other Prével correspondence may be found in the

Rev. Jules Garnier 1912-1924
Father Jules Garnier, a native of Parigny, France, was ordained
in 1877 after attending school at Mont-Saint-Michel and novitiate at
Pontigny. He served primarily around Pontigny, although he did spend some
time as the pastor of the Parish at Mont-Saint-Michel. He was the
Superior of the French House and acting superior General before elected
Superior General in 1913.
Garnier’s term as Superior General was marked by both expansion and
dispersal. The Society continued to grow in Vermont, and added another
North American mission in Forsythe, Montana. Severe financial problems
beset the Society during this time. By 1923, the financial problems were
so embedded that Garnier asked for permission to hold an Extraordinary
General Chapter. He also requested that the Sacred Congregation of
Religious appoint an Apostolic Visitor to the community. At the
Extraordinary Chapter, under the direction of Apostolic Visitor Dom
Etcheverry, a majority of constituents voted to dissolve the Society and
to seek amalgamation with another society. The chapter also elected a new
Superior General, Fr. Félix Viannes. (Although Dom Etcheverry exercised
extraordinary control over the society for the next ten years.)
This subgroup consists primarily of correspondence, some of which is
related to the dissolution of the Society. Correspondence is arranged
chronologically, although one file contains a group of letters that were
stored together in one envelope. A few translations are available and are
filed with the original. Other Garnier correspondence may be found in the
Historical Files of the SSEA. Files related to individual missions or
apostolates may be found there. While the subgroup does contain a great
deal of information related to the dissolution of the society, other
related material can be found in the Viannes and Nicolle, 1930-36
subgroups.

Rev. Félix Viannes 1924-1928
The Society educated Fr. Félix Viannes before he entered
the novitiate in Pontigny. After ordination, he served on the faculty of
his alma mater College De l’Immaculee Conception and as director of the
Apostolic School at Mont-Saint-Michel. He was the delegate to the General
Chapter in 1913, 1920 and 1924. The 1924 Chapter elected Viannes Superior
General after Fr. Louis Cheray declined to serve. Viannes reluctantly
agreed to serve and thus oversaw the dissolution of the Society.
Viannes term of office can be characterized as tumultuous. Viannes
worked closely with Apostolic Visitor Dom Etcheverry to dissolve the
Society. Viannes agreed to the sale of property and oversaw the
implementation of amalgamation with the Assumptionists. The
Assumptionists received Society property in England and France, and
Edmundites joined the Assumptionists on a one-year trial basis. Most
Edmundites decided to become Assumptionists or to become diocesan
priests. The American communities strongly opposed the dissolution, and
Viannes supported their initiative to reverse the Chapter’s decision.
Viannes was instrumental in the success of this action, working closely
with Rome to ensure the continuation of the Society through the American
Province. In 1926, the remnants of the Society purchased a residence in
Pontigny, an occurrence Viannes took as a sign of rebirth for the
Society. Viannes died in Pontigny in 1928.
The Viannes files are mostly correspondence, much of it related to
the amalgamation of the Society and finances. The correspondence series
is arranged chronologically. The correspondence is primarily in French,
although an English calendar is available.

Rev. Victor Nicolle 1930-1936
Fr. Victor Nicolle was born in Tanis, Manche, France and studied at
Mont-Saint-Michel and Laval before beginning his novitiate in Winooski,
Vermont. After his ordination, he served at Saint Michael’s College in a
number of different positions. He was the American Provincial from
1919-1930 and the1930 General Chapter elected him Superior General,
although Apostolic Visitor Dom Etcheverry continued to oversee much of the
work of Nicolle for the next six years.
One of Nicolle's first acts as Superior General was to move the
General Administration of the Society to Vermont. Members of the Society
continued to serve in Pontigny, but new members increasingly came from
America. Fr. Nicolle set up a new house of Theology in Putney, Vermont
(Theologate, Saint Mary’s). At the invitation of Francis Cardinal Bourne,
the Society began a new foundation in England at Whitton under the
direction of Fr. Louis Cheray.
This subgroup is primarily correspondence. Of particular interest is
correspondence in which Nicolle seeks sites for new missions. The
material is arranged chronologically. An English calendar is available
for the correspondence, although the correspondence itself is primarily in
French.

Rev. Victor Nicolle 1936-1946
The 1936 Chapter elected Victor Nicolle to a second term as
Superior General. His second term, which lasted 10 years due to World War
II, was an expansive time for the Society. This term marks the
transformation of the Society from a primarily French society to one
centered in America. For the first time, correspondence is primarily in
English rather than French. Fr Nicolle planted new North American
apostolates , most of which were maintained for much of the twentieth
century. New missions began in Selma, Alabama in 1937, and later in other
spots in Alabama and North Carolina. The Society also took on an English
speaking apostolate in Quebec. Expansion within Vermont occurred as well,
with the Society acquiring more land and expanding works to other parts of
the state, including Southern Vermont. It also added a formal seminary
program to its Formation program in Vermont. The Society still managed to
maintain a presence in France, including a novitiate at Pontigny, despite
World War II. In 1946 the Society held its first General Chapter in 10
years, the 1942 chapter having been postponed because of the War. This
Chapter elected Fr. Jeremiah Purtill Superior General, and Fr. Nicolle
stepped down. Nicolle returned to France and spent his remaining years
there.
This subgroup consists almost entirely of correspondence. This
correspondence is particularly important in understanding the growth and
breadth of the Society during its formative years. The series is most
likely incomplete, since Nicolle reportedly asked that recipients destroy
all his correspondence. It is clear many did not follow this directive.
Most correspondence is arranged chronologically and a calendar is
available, but material from the South is arranged into a separate
sub-series and does not have a calendar. Correspondence with other local
administrations is located with the Local Administration record group.
The South files provide great insight into the development of the
Selma Mission. Correspondence included in this sub-series is that which
accumulated in the Superior General’s office. Most originated in the
South, although copies of outgoing mail are sometimes included.

Rev. Jeremiah Purtill 1946-1952
Father Jeremiah Purtill was the
first American born Superior General for the Society. Purtill, a native
of Pawcatuck, CT, attended Saint Michael’s College, where he also worked
for a time. In his first term as Superior General he reinforced the areas
in which Fr. Nicolle had expanded the Society. He continued to expand the
Edmundite presence in the South, and saw the massive expansion of Saint
Michael’s College during the postwar boom. He also agreed to take on the
administration of new parishes in Vermont. He oversaw the establishment
of the two important academic endeavors, College St-Edme at
Pontigny, also known as the Franco-American College, and Cardinal
Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk NY. He followed his first successful
term of office with two more.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, arranged alphabetically
by correspondent/office. The series also includes correspondence from the
South, which is further subdivided by correspondent/office.
Correspondence included in this sub-series is that which accumulated in
the Superior General’s Office. Most originated in the South, although
copies of outgoing mail are sometimes included. Correspondence with other
local administrations is located with the Local Administration record
group.

Rev. Jeremiah Purtill 1952-1958
In 1952, Fr Purtill was again
elected to the office of Superior General. This second term also saw more
expansion, particularly in the South and in the Formation program. In
addition to new parishes in the South, the Society’s mission in England
underwent expansion as well, with the addition of traveling missions in a
rural area of Brentwood and Stock. During this term Purtill arranged for
the purchase of Fairholt, a mansion in Burlington, VT that was used for
the seminary. He also oversaw the transfer of the novitiate from Putney,
VT to Enders Island, CT, an island the Society received as a gift from
Alys Enders. This term was not without problems however. Expansion in
the some areas of the South resulted in consolidation in other areas of
the South, and the property in Pontigny was sold and the College of St.
Edme closed after experiencing financial problems.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged
alphabetically by correspondent/office. The series also includes
correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by

Rev. Jeremiah Purtill 1958-1964
Fr Purtill’s third term of office continued in much the same vein as
the second. Purtill continued to enhance the existing apostolates,
developing strong connections in the South, England and Quebec and
maintaining the parishes and work in France and in Vermont. The formation
program continued to develop as well during this term, and the number of
novices grew, as did places of education and a development program for the
Society. The only major apostolate to close was Cardinal Mindszenty High
School. However, Cardinal Mindszenty was closed to develop two different
and new apostolates. One, building a minor seminary in Allentown
Pennsylvania, never came to fruition, although the Edmundites did purchase
land and get fairly far in developing the idea. The second was quite
successful, however. This was the expansion of the Edmundites to Caracas,
Venezuela. In answer to Pope John XXIII’s call for priests in Latin
America, the Society of Saint Edmund established an apostolate in Caracas
in January 1964. Purtill finished off his term of office on this strong
note, and went on to serve many more years in a number of different
leadership roles in the Society.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged
alphabetically by correspondent/office. The series also includes
correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by

Rev. Eymard Galligan 1964-1970
Eymard Galligan was born in Saratoga
Springs, NY on Jan. 12, 1922. He attended Saint Michael's College and
then entered the Novitiate in Putney, VT. After going through the
Society’s formation program, he became the first Superior of the new
Novitiate on Enders Island, CT. He then became the Superior of the
Southern House, where he oversaw the growth of the missions during a
period of great turmoil throughout the Southern US. He was elected
Superior General in June 1964, and he took over a society with apostolates
in 5 countries. His first term of office is marked by the struggle to
adapt these apostolates to a changing world, especially in the South and a
church dramatically affected by the Second Vatican Council. By the end of
this term, the Society’s relationship with Saint Michael’s College changed
drastically with the establishment of a lay president, the society began
to slowly consolidate its apostolates and to scrutinize its heritage and
mission through three Chapters.

Rev. Eymard Galligan 1970-1974
Fr. Galligan’s second term as Superior
General marked the beginning of major changes in the society. New
apostolates were added in England and in Quebec, and apostolates in the
South began to transform because of integration. With the drafting of
new constitutions, some houses were changed into regions. Among the more
interesting occurrences of the term, in 1971 Fr. Galligan asked members of
the Society for a vote of confidence in his administration. Also of
importance at the time, Fr. Galligan and his General Council agreed to
participate in the US Social Security program, a decision that had great
impact on the Society.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged
alphabetically by correspondent/office. The series also includes
correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by
correspondent/office. Correspondence included in the South sub-series is
that which accumulated in the Superior General’s Office. Most originated
in the South, although copies of outgoing mail are sometimes included.

Rev.
Francis X. Gokey 1974-1978
Fr. Frank Gokey was a native of
Springfield, MA. He attended Saint Michael’s College and went to
novitiate in Putney, Vt. After serving in different roles at SMC, he
served as permanent secretary of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men
in Washington, DC. He arrived back in Winooski when elected Superior
General in 1974. He took over a society that had over 100 members,
including novices and scholastics. The Society was in the process of
studying many of its works in the process of writing its Constitutions.
Review of the apostolates continued throughout this term, and some were
closed. Of particular interest was news from France, where a small
resurgence of the community occurred. Fr. Philippe Simmonet, while in
residence at Tonnere, met Rev. Daniel Rousseau, who was attracted to the
communal life. He and others became interested in the original mission of
the founders of the Society, which had been to rekindle the Catholic faith
in the area. Rev. Rousseau was joined by Pierre Dauvissat, who began his
novitiate on June 15, 1975 with Jean Tribut, who had already begun his
studies at seminary in Paris. In April 1978, Rousseau and Tribut made
their profession into the Society of Saint Edmund. When Gokey’s term of
office ended and he was not reelected, Gokey went to France to shepherd
this new foundation.

Rev.
Edward Leary 1978-1982
Fr. Edward Leary was born in 1924 and
was educated primarily in the Society’s education institutions. He served
in a number of different apostolates, mostly in educational roles. He
served two terms as Superior General of the Society. Leary was elected at
the General Chapter in 1978. Leary’s first term of office saw the
continued aging of the society without enough new members to replace the
aging members. While most of the apostolates continued despite the
diminishing numbers of members, the society was forced to relinquish a few
parishes and works. Additionally, the new foundation in France
disintegrated for a number of reasons.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged
alphabetically by correspondent/office. The series also includes
correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by
correspondent/office. Correspondence included in the South sub-series is

Rev.
Edward Leary 1982-1986
Edward Leary’s second term of
office was quite difficult. Continuing the trend begun in his first term,
the society began a slow process of consolidating works; when a pastor
retired, he was not automatically replaced. Much energy and labor was
dedicated to the vocation office, yet few new novices took permanent
vows. The number of Edmundites dropped from 105 to 95 while almost 50% of
the membership was over 60. While not thoroughly addressed during Leary’s
term, it did have a long lasting effect on the Society.
The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged
