Enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP
The majority of Microsoft applications NetBIOS names and connections are
used. To use this Across the SMC VPN you must enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on your
Internet Connection (modem, cable, DSL, or otherwise). See below for you
specific OS.
For a more detailed explanation of this configuration please refer to the
Microsoft website for further information including screen shots.
***Note if you are connected to your ISP via dial-up, disconnect first***
WINDOWS XP (Pro and Home) and WINDOWS 2000
1. Right click Network Neighborhood
2. Select Properties
3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
4. Select Properties
5. If you connect through Dial-UP or PPP0E DSL
- Select the Networking Tab Above
- Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for
Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
- Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click Properties
- Click Advanced
- Select the WINS Tab Above
- Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
If you connect through a Wireless or UTP Local Area Connection
- Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for
Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
- Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click Properties
- Click Advanced
- Select the WINS Tab Above
- Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.
7. Now re-connect to the Internet and then run the SMC VPN client.
