~ For 35 Years, The Tradition Continues ~

Mission: To positively and proactively provide a supportive relationship to Saint Michael's College, the Fire & Rescue membership, and its alumni.

Now in its 35th year, St. Michael's Fire & Rescue alumni membership has grown to nearly 400 members. Many alumni continue their service to Fire & Rescue and the College in a variety of ways. This supportive relationship takes on several forms from continued active duty on the Fire or Rescue unit, to providing key networking opportunities for current and past members such as job placement and advice. Listed below are the most recent initiatives consistent with the Fire & Rescue Alumni mission.

History Archive Program - After 35 years of responding to emergencies, Fire & Rescue is rich in history and culture. Since 1997, work has begun in conjunction with the SMC Library's Archive Department to catalogue and record the long history of St. Michael's Fire & Rescue.

SMFDNET - An electronic mailing list for alumni, members, and friends. Those who subscribe to the list are sent periodic updates as to the current activities of the squad and former members as well as information relevant to the Fire and Rescue community. Click here for more information.

Sutton Cup Golf Tournament - The Sutton Cup is an annual golfing event intended to bring together Fire and Rescue alumni and friends for an entertaining social occasion. The tournament was established in 1998 by dedicated alumni in honor of Fire and Rescue founder Don Sutton. The 7th Annual Sutton Cup was held on September 18, 2004 at the West Bolton Golf Club in Jericho, VT. For results and photos click here. The 2005 Sutton Cup will be held on September 17, 2005. Click here for more information.

Regional Alumni Social Gatherings - Coordinated through the alumni office, Fire & Rescue alumni will have the opportunity to host regional social events nationally and internationally. These events may be planned locally and the Alumni Development office will facilitate all communications such as mailings and phone calls. Regional alumni will be needed here to serve as local coordinators for events within their area.

SMFD Career Advisory Network (C.A.N.) - For several years the College has been developing a career advisory network with alumni providing contacts for potential employment opportunities and guidance on profession choices. For years it has been founder Don Sutton's dream to establish a network for job and information referrals for the Fire & Rescue membership and alumni. In the last few months, in coordination with the Alumni office, a network has been crafted that augments the existing greater College's C.A.N program. The advisory network serves graduating Fire & Rescue students and alumni in career choices and referrals. Clearly, one of the most challenging issues a new graduate will face is finding a vocation that meets the demands of the real world. The SMFD Career Advisory Network is voluntary and any member is welcome to participate. It is offered in response to alumni requests.

Admissions Programs - One of Fire & Rescue's greatest challenges is maintaining membership. An obvious place to address this issue is at the admissions level. Developed through area alumni input, the Local Heroes brochure will be provided to any potentially interested applicant to St. Michael's College. The brochure details both units and provides potential students with contact information. For a copy of this brochure, contact the Admissions office at 1-800-SMC-8000 or via email at rescue@smcvt.edu

Fire & Rescue Alumni Directory - In coordination with the Office of Institutional Advancement, a directory of Fire & Rescue Alumni is now available to requesting alumni members. To date, over 100 requests have been received by the Office of Institutional Advancement. As a result, we have been able to update many addresses and add members who were omitted, enhancing alumni contacts and networking. This is a perpetual project and is central to maintaining a strong Fire & Rescue Alumni network.

Alumni Patch Wall-A wall of patches celebrating the success of our alumni. Located at the Sutton fire and rescue building.
