PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT, BEST BENTLEY, 7-2

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College swept all three doubles matches and handed Bentley College its first Northeast-10 Conference loss of the season on Thursday, downing the Falcons, 7-2, in women’s tennis action at the Tarrant Recreation Center.
Saint Michael’s improves to 6-1 overall and in the NE-10, while Bentley falls to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The Purple Knights were led by junior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall), who lost just one game in a straight-set victory in No. 1 singles, and partnered with freshman Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) for an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) also posted a pair of victories, including a win at No. 4 singles that went to a 10-point tie-break. Freshman Cara Bednar (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) also won twice for Saint Michael’s, which hasn’t lost since March 7.
Saint Michael’s plays another key league contest on Sunday, as the Purple Knights host undefeated Stonehill College at 12 p.m.
