Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Megan Rule (Bow, N.H./Bow) tallied a career-high five goals and one assist as third-seeded Saint Michael’s College outscored sixth-seeded Saint Anselm College, 18-14, in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse quarterfinal game on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field. With the win, the Purple Knights advance to Saturday’s NE-10 Semifinal contest versus No. 2 Bryant College at 2:30 p.m. at Stonehill College.
For Saint Michael’s (9-7), freshman Kendra LaFauci (No. Andover, Mass./North Andover) notched four goals and an assist, while junior Kate Hallisey (W. Roxbury, Mass./Brookline) and freshman Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy) recorded hat tricks with three goals apiece. Junior Lauren Piekarski (E. Sandwich, Mass./Tabor Academy) added two goals and three assists for the Purple Knights, who tied the program record with their ninth victory of the season, while classmate Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) stopped 10 shots.
The Hawks were led by freshman Lauren Glancy’s (Scituate, Mass.) five goals and two assists, while classmate Caroline Gooding (Braintree, Mass.) potted three goals and one assist. Senior Ally Maslowski (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Jillian Colonese (Guilford, Conn.) added two goals each for Saint Anselm (6-8), while senior Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Sandra Landry (Canterbury, N.H.) combined for 12 saves.
The visitors stayed with Saint Michael’s through the first 18 minutes, as Gooding’s first goal of the game pulled Saint Anselm even at 5-all. Saint Michael’s, however, scored the next five goals, all unassisted and by five different players, to take an 11-6 lead into intermission.
The Purple Knights extended their lead in the second half, as two goals apiece by Rule and Piekarski gave Saint Michael’s its biggest lead at 18-10. The Hawks cut their deficit in half with four unanswered goals in the final 7:02, including a pair of strikes in the final 29 seconds.
A win on Saturday sends Saint Michael’s into the NE-10 Championship, where the Purple Knights would meet either top-ranked Stonehill or fourth-seeded Merrimack College.
