PIEKARSKI HELPS SMC STAY UNBEATEN IN LEAGUE PLAY

Courtesy SCSU Sports Information Phone: (802) 654-2537NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Cathy Cardini (Willington, Conn.) put the Owls (1-8, 1-6 NE-10) up 6-5 with 16:46 left, but St. Michael’s (7-4, 6-0 NE-10) rallied to score four unanswered goals to defeat Southern Connecticut, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes on goals by freshman Allison Ahearn (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Cardini. The Purple Knights scored the next two to tie it at 2-2. The teams would trade goals the rest of the way (Owls/Purple Knights) and it was tied at halftime, 5-5.
Junior Lauren Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 9:57 left and had four in the game. Freshman Kendra LaFauci’s (North Andover, Mass.) second goal of the game with 15:02 left tied the game at 6-6.
Junior Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt.) made nine saves for St. Michael’s, while junior Cori Krajewski (Carmel, N.Y.) made 13 stops for Southern Connecticut. The Purple Knights outshot the Owls 31-18 in the game.
Southern Connecticut goes to Franklin Pierce on Monday at 4 p.m. in NE-10 play.
Saint Michael's visits American International on Sunday and Franklin Pierce on Wednesday before hosting Stonehill on April 24 at 11 a.m.
