Phone: (802) 654-2537MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Freshman attacker Kendra LaFauci (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) snapped an 11-all tie with 29 seconds left in regulation to give Saint Michael’s College a 12-11 win versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption College in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday at Peter Kohn Field.
LaFauci tallied two goals and an assist in the victory, while junior midfielder Lauren Piekarski (E. Sandwich, Mass./Tabor Academy) led the Purple Knights with a game-high six goals. Junior attacker Kate Hallisey (W. Roxbury, Mass./Brookline) added three goals and an assist for Saint Michael’s (2-3, 1-0 NE-10), which won its second straight one-goal contest, while classmate Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) stopped 11 shots.
For the Greyhounds, sophomore Jenny Mongeau (Westboro, Mass.) notched five goals, while junior Lauren Swiatek (Quaker Hill, Conn.) chipped in three goals and an assist. Senior Adrienne Gardner (Latham, N.Y.) added a pair of goals for Assumption (1-1, 1-1), while junior Marjorie Schepp (Middletown, N.J.) turned aside seven shots.
The visiting Greyhounds opened up a 3-1 lead four minutes into the contest, as Swiatek tallied consecutive goals. Saint Michael’s responded with three straight scores to take a 4-3 lead, and never trailed again, as Piekarski notched her fourth goal of the period with 11 seconds remaining to give the Purple Knights a 7-6 lead at the break.
In the second stanza, Saint Michael’s pushed its lead to 11-8 with 13 minutes to go before Assumption rallied with three goals in the final 12:03. That set the stage for LaFauci’s game-winner, and sophomore Noel Smith (Somers, Conn./Somers) forced a turnover on the ensuing Greyhounds’ possession to clinch the victory.
Saint Michael’s looks to even its record on Thursday in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference contest versus C.W. Post in Schenectady, N.Y., before hosting league-rival Bentley College on April 3 at 2 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
