PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN SUFFER FIRST NE-10 LOSS OF SEASON

Courtesy AIC Sports Information Phone: (802) 654-2537SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Corrie Ackerley (East Longmeadow, Mass.) notched the game-winning goal with 1:33 remaining as the American International College lacrosse team upset Saint Michael’s Sunday afternoon by a score of 9-8 at John Homer Miller Field. The Yellow Jackets notched their school-record sixth win of the season as they improved to 6-3 and 5-2 in the Northeast-10 while tying a school record by winning their fifth straight. The Purple Knights, who entered Sunday’s game tied for first place in the league, fall to 7-5 and 6-1 in the league and saw their five game winning streak snapped.
Ackerley led all scorers with three goals and three assists. Kristy McIntyre (Falmouth, Mass.) notched a pair of goals for AIC while Lindsey Wolfe (Westfield, Mass.) had a goal and two assists. Kristen Palazzo paced the visitors with three goals.
American International trailed 7-4 1:16 into the second half when SMC’s Noreen Russo scored for the Purple Knights. The Yellow Jackets then reeled off four unanswered goals, tying the game with 8:44 to play on a tally by Sheri Benton (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and taking the lead 37 seconds later on McIntyre’s second goal of the game. Palazzo would tie the game up with 4:02 to play on her third goal of the contest.
Ackerley scored on a feed from Carmen Carter (Taunton, Mass.) with 1:33 left to take the lead for good. The Yellow Jackets were able to control the ensuing draw and run out the clock for the victory.
Megan Trystman (Kwazulu Natal, South Africa) made 10 saves en route to the win. The Yellow Jacket defense has now held opponents under 10 goals in each of the last three games, allowing an average of 7.3 goals per contest.
AIC returns to action Tuesday (April 20) when it hosts Bryant in a 4:00 contest.
