CIARLETTA LEADS UMASS BOSTON OVER SMC, 7-3

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman forward Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass.) tallied five points for the second straight day, including a career-high four goals and her fourth hat trick of the season to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s ice hockey team to a 7-3 victory over Saint Michael’s College in an ECAC East contest this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 9-9-1 overall and 5-7-1 in ECAC East, while the Purple Knights fall to 2-17-1 and 1-12-0.Ciarletta’s first goal of the game gave UMass Boston the lead for good at 2-1 with 3:55 left in the first period. Her second goal proved to be the eventual game-winner, giving the Beacons a 4-2 margin with 3:56 left in the second period. Ciarletta’s next two scores came at 4:58 and 13:04 of the final period and were both set up by sophomore forward Annie Larson (Park River, N.D.), who finished with a career-high three assists, and freshman forward Melissa Belmonte (South Boston, Mass.), who assisted on each of Ciarletta’s goals for a career-best four assists.
Freshman Kasie Scafariello (Wallingford, Conn./The Gunnery School) struck the game’s first blow, scoring at the 7:04 mark of the first period to give Saint Michael’s its first lead of the weekend at 1-0. Sophomore forward Cristin Teifer (Cranbury, N.J.) answered right away for UMass Boston with her first collegiate goal just 1:02 later to knot the score at 1-1. Sophomore forward Molly Norton (Milton, Mass.) netted her 10th goal of the season to give the Beacons a 3-1 advantage at 4:07 of the second period, but junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) came back with a score for the Purple Knights to cut the deficit to 3-2 at the 6:38 mark of the middle period. Belmonte scored her 16th goal of the year at 12:52 of the second stanza as one of her five points on the day to match a personal-best and increase the UMass Boston lead to 6-2. Freshman Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) capped the day’s scoring for Saint Michael’s with a goal coming with just seven seconds remaining in the game to make it 7-3.
Freshman Shannon Palmer (Lynn, Mass.) stopped 14 shots to earn the win for the Beacons, while junior Marcy Ring (North Attleboro, Mass./Saint George's) made 43 saves for the Purple Knights.
The Purple Knights complete their home schedule with a pair of contests at Cairns Arena against New England College next weekend. They play Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 3:20 p.m.
