SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Michelle Panella (Marlboro, N.J.) tallied two goals and a pair of assists, all in the second period, as Sacred Heart University defeated Saint Michael’s College, 5-1, in women’s hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

Following a scoreless first period, the Division I Pioneers broke through with four goals in the second stanza. Panella opened the scoring 1:45 into the frame, sliding a shot through the pads of sophomore goaltender Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32). Panella connected again 2:25 later, rifling a shot past Mason top-shelf.

The Purple Knights cut their deficit in half just eight seconds later, as junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) notched an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season. Sacred Heart responded midway through the period, as freshman Erin Barry (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and senior Rebecca Gelinas (So. Windsor, Conn.) tallied their first goals of the season 20 seconds apart. Panella assisted on both goals, as did junior Kristina Derita (W. Collingswood, N.J.), her third and fourth assists of the game.

Sacred Heart (5-5-0) completed the scoring 6:53 into the final period, as sophomore Sarah Turbert (Norwalk, Conn.) converted.

Freshman Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, Alaska) picked up the victory in net, stopping 21 shots. Mason turned aside 45 shots, including 19 in the second period and all 17 she faced in the opening stanza.
