RPI BLANKS SAINT MICHAEL’S TO COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP

By Lauren Hurley ‘04 Phone: 802-654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Eighth-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute completed a weekend sweep against Saint Michael’s College on Saturday, beating the Purple Knights, 3-0, in ECAC East women’s hockey action at Cairns Arena.
Freshman Julie Aho (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored the eventual game-winner when she slid one between the legs of Purple Knights’ goaltender Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt.) at 15:03 in the first period. Sophomore Julie Welte (Pueblo. Colo.) and junior Meredith Langille (Quincy, Mass.) dished out the assists. Junior defender Lane Dielwart (Calgary, Alberta) added some insurance for the Engineers with only three minutes left in the second frame. Freshman Sarah Daniel (Calgary, Alberta) picked up the assist.
Junior Bridget Rice (Bowie, Md.) rounded out the scoring for Rensselaer when she ripped one past Mason at 15:33 into the third period off of a pass from senior captain Deanna Dougherty (Albany, N.Y.).
Mason stopped 54 shots on the day while Engineers goaltender Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, Mo.) made 11 saves. With the loss, the Purple Knights drop to 0-5-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the ECAC East while Rensselaer improves to 5-1-2 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play. Saint Michael’s returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. when the Purple Knights travel to Amherst College.
