SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Makaila Sinclair (Marblehead, Mass.) scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, as New England College downed Saint Michael’s College, 5-2, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Sunday at Cairns Arena.

Freshman Jacquelyn Parker (Keene, N.H.) stopped 22 shots, including 10 in the final period, for the Pilgrims (13-6-3, 9-3-3 ECAC East), who held a 61-24 shots on goal advantage.

For the Purple Knights, junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) scored both goals, one on the power play. Sophomore Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) recorded 56 saves for Saint Michael’s (2-19-1, 1-14-0), which completed the home portion of its schedule 0-12-1.

The Pilgrims opened the scoring in the first period with a pair of even-strength goals. Sinclair tallied first at 12:16 with a 4-on-4 goal, and 4:18 later, junior Gina Costanzo (Branford, Conn.) lit the lamp after winning a scrum in front of the net.

Saint Michael’s cut its deficit in half with 1:32 left in the period, as Lyons connected from a sharp angle off of assists by sophomore Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) and freshman Martha Salois (Winthrop, Maine/Windale Icedogs) for her team-leading seventh power play marker.

Lyons evened the score seven minutes into the second stanza, connecting with Miaskiewicz for her 14th goal of the season. New England, however, restored its two-goal advantage midway through the frame with a pair of scores 1:57 apart, as Sinclair and freshman Ashley Koltenback (Doylestown, Pa.) converted.

The Pilgrims maintained their 4-2 lead through most of a penalty-free third period, and sealed the victory on a goal by freshman Ashley Watkins (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) with 1:24 to go.

Saint Michael’s closes its fourth varsity season with a series at conference-rival Salve Regina University beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. and concluding on Saturday at 2 p.m.
