SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – New England College converted on three of five power play opportunities to rally past Saint Michael’s College, 4-1, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

Freshman Michelle Kane (Charlestown, Mass.) notched two goals and an assist for the Pilgrims, while sophomore Marissa Porri (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and freshman Ashley Koltenback (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied a goal and an assist. Freshman Jessica Clute (Somersworth, N.H.) added a pair of assists, and classmate Jacquelyn Parker (Keene, N.H.) stopped 29 shots and assisted on the game-winner for New England (12-6-3, 8-3-3 ECAC East).

Freshman Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) scored the lone Purple Knights’ goal, while junior Marcy Ring (No. Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) turned aside 52 of 56 shots as Saint Michael’s (2-18-1, 1-13-0) lost its 10th consecutive home game.

The Purple Knights opened the scoring 14 minutes into a penalty-free first period. Gagne lit the lamp for her eighth goal of the season, with assists credited to junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) and sophomore Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers).

New England evened the score 6:32 into the second stanza, as Porri picked up her team-leading fifth power play goal of the season.

The Pilgrims took advantage of a questionable Saint Michael’s body checking penalty late in the second period to take the lead for good. Koltenback tallied the eventual game-winner forty seconds into the final period, with Parker picking up the second assist.

Kane sealed the victory with two goals in the final 7:16, including an empty-netter with 32 seconds remaining.

The two teams complete their weekend series on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. The contest is the final home game of the season for Saint Michael’s, as senior Lauren Landrigan (Simsbury, Conn.), who played in her team-record 70th game on Saturday, will be honored prior to the contest.
