PURCHASE, N.Y. - Saint Michael's College stayed even with top-ranked Manhattanville College for one period before falling to the Valiants, 9-0, in ECAC East women's ice hockey action on Saturday.

Junior Cherie Stewart (Lake Forest, Calif.) and sophomore Jessica Temesy (Blenheim, Ontario) each scored twice as the hosts racked up an amazing 85-5 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Renee Kirnan (Dewitt, N.Y.) stopped five shots to record the shutout for Manhattanville (11-1-1, 6-0-0 ECAC East), which won its 11th straight contest.

A trio of goaltenders combined for 76 saves for the Purple Knights. Sophomore Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned aside all 27 shots she faced in a scoreless first period. Junior Marcy Ring (No. Attleboro, Mass./Saint George's School) recorded 21 saves in the second stanza, while sophomore Erin Gilmore (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) stopped 28 third-period shots for Saint Michael's (0-12-1, 0-7-0).

The Purple Knights, backed by perfect goaltending by Mason, shocked Manhattanville in a penalty-free first period. Despite being outshot 27-0 in the frame, the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.

The Valiants, however, broke through for five even-strength goals against Ring in the second stanza, and tacked on four more in the final period while peppering Gilmore with 32 shots.

Saint Michael's completes its weekend series with Manhattanville on Sunday at 2 p.m. before the Purple Knights return home to host College of the Holy Cross in a two-game set at Cairns Arena Jan. 24-25.
