Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal and added three assists to lead College of the Holy Cross past Saint Michael’s College, 5-1, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Sunday at Cairns Arena.
Sophomore Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist for the Crusaders, while freshman Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded 27 saves for Holy Cross (7-7-1, 6-4-1 ECAC East).
For the Purple Knights, junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) notched a power-play goal, while classmate Marcy Ring (No. Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) stopped 62 shots, including 25 in the third period, as Saint Michael’s (0-15-1, 0-10-0) lost its 12th straight game.
The Purple Knights opened the scoring with a power-play tally 11:46 into the contest, as Lyons notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season off of assists by sophomore Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) and freshman Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy). It marked the first time Saint Michael’s has led in its last seven games.
The lead was short-lived, however, as just 2:25 later, Campbell wristed a shot from just inside the blue line past Ring.
Holy Cross took the lead for good midway through the second stanza. Just two minutes after being denied on a shorthanded breakaway, Wetherbee rifled a shot over Ring’s shoulder for an unassisted tally.
The visitors sealed the victory with three goals in the final period. Junior Meghan Mahoney (Utica, N.Y.) gave the Crusaders a 3-1 lead with a power-play marker 3:33 into the frame, while Bloxson and freshman Dianna Muth (Lee, N.H.) netted even-strength goals midway through the period.
Saint Michael’s plays its next four games on the road, beginning with a weekend series at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday and Saturday. The Purple Knights conclude the home portion of their schedule with a two-game set versus New England College Feb. 14-15.
