CRUSADERS PULL AWAY LATE, DOWN PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Six different players scored goals as the College of the Holy Cross tallied four times in the third period and defeated Saint Michael’s College, 6-1, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

The Crusaders were led by sophomore Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.), who notched the game-winning goal and added an assist. Freshman Cathryn O’Connor (Milton, Mass.) also recorded a goal and an assist, while classmate Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) stopped 27 shots for Holy Cross (6-7-1, 5-4-1 ECAC East).

For the Purple Knights, sophomore Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) tallied a third-period goal, while sophomore Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned aside 46 shots, including 20 in the final stanza, for Saint Michael’s (0-14-1, 0-9-0).

Holy Cross opened the scoring late in the first period, as O’Connor collected her sixth goal of the season. The Crusaders doubled its advantage midway through the second frame, as Wetherbee notched the game’s lone power play goal.

The score remained 2-0 in the third period when Crusaders’ senior Rachelle Beaudoin (Berlin, N.H.) potted an unassisted goal. Just 1:06 later, the Purple Knights cracked the scoreboard, as Miaskiewicz collected off of assists from freshman Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) and junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional).

Holy Cross, however, sealed the win with three goals in a 3:01 span midway through the final period. Freshman Melissa Flanagan (Manchester Center, Vt.), junior Molly Corkery (Salisbury, Conn.) and freshman Christine O’Hara (Burnsville, Minn.) tallied the clinching goals for the Crusaders.

Saint Michael’s and Holy Cross complete their weekend series on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
