Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Alena Harrison (Westwood, Mass.) scored twice as Amherst College held off non-conference rival Saint Michael’s College, 6-3, in women’s ice hockey action on Tuesday at Cairns Arena.
Senior Alison White (Brookline, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, while freshman Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, N.J.) stopped 25 shots in net for Amherst (5-5-0).
Sophomore Halley Grabarz (Manchester, Vt./Univ. of Southern Maine) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Saint Michael’s (0-11-1). Freshmen Martha Salois (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) and Kasie Scafariello (Wallingford, Conn./Gunnery School) also scored for the Purple Knights, while junior Marcy Ring (No. Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) kept the hosts in the contest with 62 saves, including 26 in the second period.
Amherst opened the scoring late in the first period, as freshman Rachel Simon (W. Orange, N.J.) took advantage of the stanza’s lone penalty. A pair of even-strength goals by Harrison and White gave the Lady Jeffs a 3-0 lead late in the second period.
Saint Michael’s got on the scoreboard with just 1:30 left in the second frame, as Salois knocked in a rebound off of a shot by classmate Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy). Grabarz pulled the hosts within 3-2 early in the final period with her first goal of the season, but Amherst regained its two-goal lead four minutes later, as sophomore Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the eventual game-winner.
The Purple Knights again pulled within one, as just 46 seconds later, Scafariello notched her first career goal. That was as close as Saint Michael’s would get, as Harrison and junior Alicia Pichard (Potomac, Md.) scored midway through the frame to complete the scoring.
Saint Michael’s travels to top-ranked Manhattanville College for a two-game series this weekend before hosting College of the Holy Cross in a two-game set Jan. 24-25.
