COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College field hockey team earned its first victories of the season this past week, winning each of their two contests to improve to 2-3. On Tuesday, the Purple Knights defeated Assumption 1-0, as Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./ Bishop Fenwick), with help by Ashley Webb (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), scored the game’s deciding goal early in the second half. Goaltender Tina Nardi (West Pawlet, Vt./ Salem Central) pitched in by turning away all five shots she faced. On Saturday, the team won their home opener 2-0 over Stonehill, marking the team’s first-ever contest on the College’s newly-built Christopher Duffy Artificial Turf Field at Doc Jacobs Complex. Ashley Webb and Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount St. Mary’s Academy) each tallied second-half goals off of assists from fellow classmate Lindsay Harrison (Brandon, Vt./Otter Valley Union), as Tina Nardi recorded six saves extending her streak to over 143 minutes without allowing a goal.

The cross country teams opened their season on Saturday at Plattsburgh State’s Cardinal Classic, as the men finished second out of seven teams with 54 points and the women placed fourth out of five with 105 points. Paul Wagner (Woods Hole, Mass./ Suffield Academy) finished second overall completing the men’s 8K race in 26:43, averaging a 5:23 mile and Thomas Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) placed 10
th with a time of 27:57. Lionel Welch (Worthington, Mass./ Wahconah Regional) and James Heelan (Centennial, Colo./ Arapahoe) placed 14th and 15th, completing the race in 28:31 and 28:41 respectively. Brendan Johnson (Richboro, Pa./ Council Rock South) finished in 19th, ensuring the Purple Knights’ second place finish. The women were anchored by Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./ Vermont Academy) who was SMC’s top finisher, coming in 10th out of 51 in the 6K race. Freshman Mary Lynn Denholm (Sparks, Md./St. Paul) finished 17th overall with a time of 26:48 as senior Liz Gray (Westmoreland, N.H./Keene) finished 20th at 27:18. Bridget Craig (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and Makaila Fallup (Charlestown, R.I./Chariho Regional) factored as the Purple Knights’ final two point gatherers placing 33rd and 37th with times of 28:48 and 29:26.

The golf team also opened their season this past weekend, placing second out of four teams behind winner Castleton State. Senior Mike Duffy (Yarmouthport, Mass./ Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) completed the course with a score of 78, as junior Mike Ciardullo (Walden, N.Y./Canterbury) finished just one stroke behind. Andrew Deloria (Gansevoort, N.Y./ Saratoga Springs) finished the day with an 82, and one stroke separated Jonathan Goguen (Ashby, Mass./ Saint Bernard’s) and Jeff Vickers (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy) who finished with respective scores of 84 and 85.

The men’s soccer team was shutout twice this past week and for the third consecutive game, dropping their record to 1-4. After being defeated 1-0 on Tuesday to Castleton State, the team traveled to Southern Connecticut and suffered a 5-0 loss, despite goalie Tim Williamson’s (Wakefield, R.I./ Barrington) seven saves.

The women’s soccer team also finished the week with a record of 1-4. Freshman Kelley Ruch (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) scored her team leading third goal of the season Wednesday, as SMC jumped out to an early lead against the nation’s third ranked team. The Purple Knights surrendered four unanswered goals however, dropping a 4-1 contest to Franklin Pierce. The team then traveled to North Andover, Mass. on Sunday to take on Merrimack College who led an offensive attack that was answered by sophomore goalkeeper Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./ Exeter), who turned away 17 of the 18 shots she saw. The one that got away proved to be the difference as the team was defeated by a final score of 1-0.
