PURPLE KNIGHTS FALL TO CHIEFTAINS, 68-57

COLCHESTER, Vt. – In women’s basketball action, Saint Michael’s College was defeated 68-57 by Northeast-10 rival Stonehill College at the Ross Sports Center tonight. At halftime, the Purple Knights led by two points. However, Saint Michael’s were blanked in an 11-0 run by the Chieftains midway through the second half, securing the victory for Stonehill.

Stonehill moves to 7-3 in the Northeast-10 (11-3 overall) with tonight’s win. Senior guard Andrea Barr (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) led the Chieftains with 13 points during her 35 minutes on the court. Barr received much offensive help from classmate Jillian Middlemiss (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) who contributed 11 points and seven assists in total. The senior duo of Barr and Middlemiss made quite the pair in tonight’s victory as early as just three seconds into the game when Barr converted a pass from Middlemiss into a quick two points. After 11 minutes of play, Stonehill led 23-13.

Saint Michael’s was led by senior Lindsey Bradt (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) with 14 points, while recording nine rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Brigid Hegarty (No. Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) had 12 points and four assists while senior Erica Kensey (Bow, N.H./Bow) collected 13 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists in the loss. Saint Michael’s slips to 5-9 overall and 2-9 in league play.

While Saint Michael’s closed the gap in the remaining minutes of the first half to better Stonehill by two points, 33-31, it wasn’t enough to contain the Chieftains in the second half of play.

In the second half, the Chieftains inched its way back until a three-point basket (7:17) by Kim Morast (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) sparked an 11-0 run. Stonehill’s winning streak continues, coming out on top in five of its last six contests.

The Chieftains will return to Merkert Gymnasium to host Saint Rose on Saturday. Saint Michael’s will travel Monday to meet Saint Anselm, who has lost its last two conference games. The Purple Knights will return to Ross Sports Center Thursday to face the Le Moyne Dolphins at at 5:30.
