Kensey led all Purple Knights (8-14 overall, 5-14 NE-10) with 20 points while notching four rebounds, assists and steals apiece. Her bucket with 3:21 remaining off a pass from classmate Lindsey Bradt (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) pushed her past the 1,000-point plateau, where she joined 12 other former Purple Knights. Sophomore Brigid Hegarty (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) scored 14 points for Saint Michael’s while freshman Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) scored nine points and grabbed 10 boards.
For Southern Connecticut (16-7, 11-7 NE-10), Jackle’s milestone evening overshadowed a dominating performance by senior Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.), who scored 23 points and collected 11 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and two steals. Jackle, who netted her 1,000th point on a free throw with 8:18 left in the game, finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Owls hit their first 18 free throws while shooting 21-of-23 for the game.
Saint Michael’s led 7-2 just two minutes into the game before Southern Connecticut responded with a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to stake a 21-13 advantage. Wilcox scored nine points during the run while Jackle had six points and four rebounds. The Purple Knights immediately took charge, scoring the next 10 points on baskets by four different players to forge a 23-21 lead. The Owls then scored six straight points to lead 27-23 before the Purple Knights closed out the half on another 7-2 run and took a 30-29 lead into the locker room.
The Owls opened the second half on a 15-2 run, taking a 44-32 lead at 13:58 while holding the Purple Knights to a pair of Rayner free throws over the first six minutes. Southern Connecticut continued to lead by double figures until the Purple Knights began chiseling away in the final eight minutes. Hegarty and Kensey combined to score 18 of the Purple Knights’ final 20 points as they pulled to within 64-62 with six seconds left, but sophomore Anabel Perdomo (Lawrence, Mass.) hit two free throws to seal the win. The Owls hit eight-of-10 free throws in the final three minutes to ice the victory.
Southern Connecticut, which entered the day seventh in the race for the 12-team postseason tournament, returns to action on Saturday at Stonehill College. Saint Michael’s, which remains 11th in the league, hosts in-state rival Green Mountain College on Friday at 6 p.m. before visiting NE-10 rival Le Moyne College on Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
