The Purple Knights improved to 9-14 in reaching the century mark for the first time since a 101-78 victory on Jan. 6, 1999, at Northeast-10 Conference foe Bryant College. Saint Michael’s remains 5-14 in the league and in 11th place in the race for the 12-team postseason. Green Mountain fell to 1-18 with the loss.
Kensey’s 23 points came on 11-of-18 shooting, and she also picked up seven steals in 22 minutes in her 100th collegiate game. Sophomore Brigid Hegarty (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) notched 19 points, five steals, and four assists while senior Lindsey Bradt (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) collected 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Nia Campos (Bronx, N.Y./Horace Mann) and freshman Laura Grzewinski (Ashby, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) each hit career highs in points with 13 and 12, respectively, while Campos grabbed 11 boards for her first career double-double. Sophomore Holly Reeves (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) collected 10 points, nine assists and six rebounds, and junior Julia Boynton (Concord, N.H./Concord) hauled down eight rebounds.
The Purple Knights wracked up a 57-39 advantage on the glass while turning the ball over only nine times and shooting 46.7 percent (43-of-92) from the field. They led 54-29 at halftime as Kensey (15 points), Bradt (14) and Hegarty (14) were already in double digits.
Junior Tanya DeLaMater’s (Troy, N.Y.) 22 points led Green Mountain. The Eagles shot 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the field, including two-for-15 from long range, but their 14-for-18 shooting from the charity stripe produced a good chunk of their offense. They blocked seven Purple Knight shots but collected only four assists while turning the ball over 25 times.
Hegarty’s basket 1:23 into the game gave the Purple Knights the lead for good, as they led for the final 38:37 of the game. Up 9-5 four minutes in, Saint Michael’s used a 15-4 run to create some breathing space, pumping its lead to 24-9 at 11:41. Green Mountain crept to within 28-20 by 7:36, but the Purple Knights scored 37 of the game’s next 44 points to take a 65-27 lead at 16:39 of the second half. They followed up their 54-point first half with a 46-point second frame, capped by Campos’ put-back of senior Katie Balka’s (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) missed free throw with a few seconds remaining.
Green Mountain travels to Teikyo Post University on Monday for their next game while the Purple Knights hit the road on Wednesday to continue their league schedule at Le Moyne College at 5:30 p.m. They return home for Senior Day next Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1:30 p.m. against Saint Anselm College. It will be the final home game for Kensey, Bradt, Balka, and Christine Johnson (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames).
