LODI, N.J. – The Saint Michael’s College women’s basketball team used another strong defensive effort and improved to 3-0 under new head coach Jennifer Niebling after a 63-46 non-conference win on Saturday at Felician College.

The Purple Knights built a 36-21 halftime lead thanks to 56.5 percent shooting from the field (13-for-23), including 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. They led by 20 for much of the second half and ended up shooting 48.8 percent for the game (21-for-43).

Eight players picked up at least four points for Saint Michael’s, led by senior Erica Kensey’s (Bow, N.H./Bow) 15-point effort on 7-of-10 shooting. Sophomore Brigid Hegarty (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) had 10 points and four assists, freshman Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellow Falls Union) collected eight points, senior Lindsey Bradt (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) had seven, and sophomore Elaine Fischer (Winchendon, Mass./Gardner) notched six.

This is the Purple Knights’ best start since the 1992-93 squad started the season 4-0, and it was the first time since Nov. 23 and 29, 1993, that Saint Michael’s held consecutive opponents under 50 points. In those games, they won at Middlebury College, 56-47, and at home versus Adelphi University, 71-46.

Solid Purple Knights’ defense limited Felician to 0-for-12 shooting from three-point range while the Golden Falcons were forced into 16 turnovers. They shot only 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from the field in the first half and 32.1 percent (17-for-53) for the game. Rochelle Forbes (Montreal, Quebec) and Diane Burns (Brewster, N.Y.) each scored 11 for Felician (0-4).

The Purple Knights complete their road trip on Tuesday in New Haven, Conn., when they open their Northeast-10 Conference schedule at Southern Connecticut State University. Saint Michael’s will celebrate the Ross Sports Center’s 30th birthday when they open their home season on Sunday, Nov. 30, against American International College.
