By Josh Kessler ’04 Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Assumption College senior Michelle Towne (East Taunton, Mass.) recorded her fourth straight double-double and keyed a 12-2 run in the final 2:30 as the Greyhounds knocked off Saint Michael’s College, 61-52, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at the Ross Sports Center.
Assumption won its fifth straight game to improve to 15-5 overall and 11-4 in the NE-10. Senior Katelyn Dwyer (Wakefield, Mass.) led Assumption with 16 points while Towne notched 13 points and 12 boards. Junior Meghan Morrissey (Watervliet, N.Y.) scored 11 points and junior Freddie Grant (Huntingdon, Quebec) had a solid all-around outing with eight points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Despite committing 25 turnovers, the Greyhounds stayed in the game thanks to 47.4 percent shooting from the field (18-for-38) and 76.9 percent on free throws (20-for-26).
Saint Michael’s senior Lindsey Bradt (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) led all scorers with 17 points, hitting six of eight shots, while also dishing out four assists. Classmate Erica Kensey (Bow, N.H./Bow) scored 12 points and notched seven steals. The Purple Knights picked up 17 steals but turned the ball over 20 times while losing for the eighth time in nine games. They currently stand at 6-12 overall and 3-12 in the league as they fight for one of the final two playoff spots.
With her team down 50-49, Towne scored seven points and snagged six boards in the final 2:30 of the contest to help the Greyhounds rally from a seven-point deficit. Saint Michael’s trailed only 54-52 after Bradt nailed a jumper with 50 seconds left, but Assumption hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to pull away. The Purple Knights were forced to foul after missing shots on each of their last five possessions.
The Purple Knights trailed 7-2 just two minutes into the game before embarking on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 16-9 lead. Bradt had seven points during the run and assisted on one of sophomore Brigid Hegarty’s (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) two three-pointers during the game. Assumption slowly chipped away, eventually re-taking the lead, 29-28, on Morrissey’s three-pointer at 2:21. The teams went into the break tied at 31, and both started the second half cold.
Each team had 37 points with 11:40 remaining before the Purple Knights scored seven straight points and eventually led 46-39, but the Greyhounds kept fighting back. Down 48-45 with 3:45 to go, their win can be credited much to Towne and the team hitting 12 of 13 free throws over the last four minutes.
Assumption hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday. The Purple Knights return to action Saturday, as well, traveling to American International College for a 1:30 p.m. match-up. They also travel to the College of Saint Rose on Feb. 4 before returning home on Feb. 7 for a 1:30 p.m. contest with Pace University.
