COLCHESTER, Vt. – Two players recorded double-doubles as the undefeated American International College women’s basketball team knocked off Saint Michael’s College, 67-52, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday at the Ross Sports Center.

Sophomore Sharmion Selman (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) recorded game highs of 21 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for the Yellow Jackets, and classmate Tiffany Wooten (Mattapan, Mass./Mattapan) notched 10 points and 10 rebounds.

AIC began the game on a 9-0 run thanks to five Saint Michael’s turnovers before the Purple Knights rallied to tie it at 11-all seven minutes into the contest. Four players recorded baskets during the run.

After losing the lead only 37 seconds after knotting the score, the closest Saint Michael’s pulled the rest of the game was 15-13 on a layup by freshman Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) at 10:49. Between that basket and sophomore Brigid Hegarty’s (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) hoop at 2:17, the Purple Knights were held without a basket and had succumbed to a 15-4 run. They trailed 38-23 at the break despite 11 points from Hegarty.

The Yellow Jackets kept pouring it on in the second half, leading by as much as 22 before the Purple Knights chipped it down to 13. However, four Selman baskets in a 1:23 span in the middle of the period dashed all SMC comeback hopes.

Saint Michael’s was hurt by a season-high 24 turnovers and a season-low 33.3 percent shooting. The Purple Knights out-rebounded AIC 50-40 thanks to three players corralling at least eight boards, but their 3-of-17 three-point shooting hung them out to dry. Hegarty finished with a team-high 14 points, senior Erica Kensey (Bow, N.H./Bow) had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Rayner connected for seven points on 3-of-3 shooting. Sophomore point guard Holly Reeves (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) and junior Nia Campos (Bronx, N.Y./Horace Mann) each pulled down nine rebounds.

AIC is now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, a record which includes a victory over Bentley College, ranked in the top five in the nation. After beginning the season 3-0, Saint Michael’s has dropped consecutive league contests by 15 points apiece. The Purple Knights hit the road once again on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. league match-up with Assumption College, and they return to the Ross on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. game with Bryant College.
