PURPLE KNIGHTS SPLIT WITH PACE IN CONFERENCE OPENER SMC women cruise to 8-1 win; Setters blank SMC men, 9-0 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      FOR MORE INFORMATION March 6, 2004                                                                           Contact: Seth Cole                                                                                                 Phone: (802) 654-2537 COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College split a Northeast-10 Conference tennis doubleheader versus Pace University on Saturday at the Tarrant Recreation Center, winning the women’s match and falling in the men’s contest. In the first match of the day, the Setter men opened their season with a 9-0 shutout. The Purple Knights, with just four eligible players, were forced to forfeit two singles and one doubles match. Saint Michael’s falls to 0-2 with the loss. On the women’s side, Saint Michael’s swept the three doubles matches to record an 8-1 victory in the season opener for both teams. Junior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) won both the No. 1 singles match and teamed with freshman Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) to record a victory in No. 1 doubles. Burns also won in No. 3 singles, while sophomore Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) was a dual winner, earning a victory in No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles with classmate Elizabeth Madlem (Ventura, Calif./Villanova Prep). The Purple Knights return to action on Sunday, as Saint Michael’s hosts league-rival Bryant College, with the men starting at 10 a.m. and the women beginning at 2 p.m. MATCH SUMMARIES Pace Men 9, Saint Michael’s 0 Singles 1.
