In the opening match, freshman Andrew Bolduc’s (So. Burlington, Vt./So. Burlington) collegiate debut was the difference as the Purple Knight men won their first contest of the season. Bolduc recorded a straight-set win in sixth singles, and teamed with classmate Spencer Williams (East Hampton, Conn./Northwood School) for an 8-5 triumph in second doubles. Freshman Will Benoit (New London, Conn./Fitch Senior) also tallied multiple victories for Saint Michael’s (1-4, 1-2 NE-10), while junior Josh Holt (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock) sealed the match with his three-set win in first singles. Merrimack falls to 1-2 overall and in league action. In the women’s contest, junior Shannon Bergin’s (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) 6-0, 6-0 win against reigning conference Player of the Year Haven Wynne (Nahant, Mass.) set the tone. Saint Michael’s (3-1, 3-1) took five of the six singles matches, as senior Courtney Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) and sophomores Elizabeth Madlem (Ventura, Calif./Villanova Prep) and Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) notched two victories apiece. Merrimack slips to 1-1 overall and in conference play. Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday with 1 p.m. contests against conference rival American International College.
