PURPLE KNIGHTS DROP CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER TO BRYANT SMC women lose first match of season; men suffer second consecutive shutout FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      FOR MORE INFORMATION March 7, 2004                                                                           Contact: Seth Cole                                                                                                 Phone: (802) 654-2537 COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College dropped a Northeast-10 Conference tennis doubleheader versus Bryant College on Sunday at the Tarrant Recreation Center, losing the women’s match, 7-2, and the men’s contest, 9-0. In the first match of the day, the Bryant men opened their season with a convincing victory, outscoring the Purple Knights 64 games to 13. With just four eligible players, Saint Michael’s (0-3, 0-2 NE-10) had to forfeit two singles and one doubles contest. On the women’s side, the Bulldogs swept all six singles matches to open their season by rallying past the Purple Knights. Recording victories for Saint Michael’s (1-1, 1-1 NE-10) were junior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) and freshman Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) in No. 1 doubles, and sophomores Elizabeth Madlem (Ventura, Calif./Villanova Prep) and Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) in No. 2 doubles.
