COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) threw a two-hit shutout in the opener and three innings of hitless relief in the nightcap as Saint Michael’s College swept a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader versus University of Massachusetts Lowell on Friday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights won game one, 1-0, for their program-record 10th win of the season, and recorded a 3-0 victory in game two.

In the opener, Roberge allowed just two baserunners, both of whom reached on infield singles, while striking out 11 for her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season. The righthander struck out two batters in each of the first five innings, and allowed just one ball to leave the infield in improving to 8-4 on the year.

Saint Michael’s (11-11, 5-7 NE-10) scored the only run it would need in the second inning, as junior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) led off with a solo home run to right-center. Classmate Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) singled three times as the Purple Knights managed just four hits in the contest.

For UMass Lowell (17-15, 12-8), sophomore Ashley Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) and freshman Melissa Hanafin (Burlington, Mass.) each singled, while freshman Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, Mass.) struck out eight batters in a complete-game loss.

In the nightcap, junior Heather Chamberlin (Danville, Vt./Danville) allowed just three hits without a walk in four innings to earn her first win of the season. Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the third inning, as senior Katie Healey (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) laced a leadoff double and scored on a throwing error. The hosts added two unearned runs in the fourth, with senior Sara Pope’s (W. Springfield, Mass./W. Springfield) run-scoring double the big blow.

Junior Tabitha Hebert (Lowell, Mass.) singled and allowed just one earned run in five innings of work for the River Hawks, who managed just three hits while committing three errors in the nightcap.

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights continue their 10-game homestand with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against league-rival College of Saint Rose.
