COLCHESTER, Vt. – The College of Saint Rose extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Golden Knights won the opener in eight innings, 3-2, and took an 11-4 decision in the nightcap.

In game one, sophomore Tricia Ritchie (Port Jervis, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, as she drew a two-out walk and came around on a pair of wild pitches. Despite blowing a save opportunity, Ritchie also earned the win on the mound, pitching the final two innings. Sophomore Bridget Francisco (Amsterdam, N.Y.) gave Saint Rose (10-14, 6-8 NE-10) the early lead with a run-scoring double in the third, and scored later in the frame to push the Golden Knights lead to 2-0.

Saint Michael’s (11-13, 5-9) forced extra innings with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) scored the Purple Knights’ first run following her second single of the contest, and classmate Meg Currier’s (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh was followed by freshman Meggan Roberge’s (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) one-out single, evening the score. Roberge also pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out 12. The Purple Knights had the tying runner on third with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but a 1-3-2 double play ended the game.

In the nightcap, Saint Rose erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth before blowing open the game with four runs in the fifth. Freshman Evelyn Peters (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tripled and doubled to lead the Golden Knights’ 11-hit attack, while junior Kim Frisbee (Colonie, N.Y.) added a double and a single. Senior Vicky Camaj (Clifton Park, N.Y.) belted a two-run homer, while Ritchie again closed the contest with 2.1 innings of one-run relief.

Brooks led Saint Michael’s with a triple, single and two runs scored, while senior Beth Murray (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady) added a pair of singles. Sophomore Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched 5.2 innings in falling to 2-2 on the season.

Saint Michael’s looks to bounce back on Sunday, as the Purple Knights continue their 10-game homestand with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against league-rival Bentley College.
