The visiting Purple Knights (18-16, 12-12 Northeast-10) banged out 20 hits in the two games combined, as Saint Michael’s plated three runs in the first two innings of the opener and added five tallies in the fourth and fifth frames to collect the first game triumph. Sophomore Elizabeth Pigeon (St. Albans, Vt.) and freshman Caitlin McHugh (West Roxbury,
Mass.) added RBI in the opener for the Purple Knights, while freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt.) allowed two hits and struck out six on the mound to pick up her 11th win of the season. Senior Katie Salomone (East Moriches, N.Y.) and junior Nicole Pichette (Exeter, R.I.) rapped out hits in the opening game setback for the host Chieftains (6-24, 4-18 Northeast-10), as junior Jessica Hamill (Saugus, Mass.) allowed just three earned runs and fanned two in taking the loss on the mound.
Saint Michael’s jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead in the nightcap on an RBI double by junior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn.) and an RBI single off the bat of junior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt.), but Stonehill answered with four tallies in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by freshmen Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine) and Meaghan O’Connor (East Taunton, Mass.) and a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.). The Purple Knights closed to within 4-3 in the third on an RBI triple by Christmas, and the visitors took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth courtesy of a Currier RBI single, Gill’s third double of the game and a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt.). Saint Michael’s added an insurance run in the fifth on Currier’s second RBI single of the game, as sophomore Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine) picked up the win in relief for the Purple Knights while Roberge collected her fourth save with 2 1/3 innings of work. Martin had two of Stonehill’s six hits in the nightcap setback, as freshman Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.) struck out six in taking the loss for the Chieftains.
Stonehill travels to Springfield, Mass. on Sunday afternoon for a Northeast-10 doubleheader with American International that begins at Noon, while Saint Michael’s heads to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant in a Northeast-10 twinbill that also begins at Noon.
