The Hawks improve to 6-11 overall and begin their league slate 2-0. Saint Michael’s is 6-8 overall and remains winless in the NE-10 at 0-4.
In Game 1, junior Katelyn McGrath (Hudson, N.H.) went two-for-three and played a hand in two runs in the Hawks’ 3-1 win. Sophomore Allison Joseph’s (Bedford, N.H.) third-inning sacrifice fly plated junior Kara Wall (Braintree, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead before Joseph doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on sophomore Julie Pistorino’s (Abington, Mass.) RBI double.
The Purple Knights cut the lead in half in the sixth when sophomore Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) doubled home freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester), but freshman hurler Kathleen Golden (Somerset, Mass.) escaped a one-out jam with runners on the corners to avoid further damage. McGrath drove home freshman Brianna Welenc (Greenfield, Mass.) for insurance in the seventh.
Golden went the distance, allowing five hits and two bases on balls while striking out four. Freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) picked up the loss for Saint Michael’s despite striking out seven and walking only one during a complete-game effort.
In the second game, sophomore Brigitte June (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) pitched a two-hit gem as the Hawks completed the sweep, 3-0. June struck out five, walked two, and faced only four batters over the minimum. The Hawks immediately took advantage of poor Purple Knights defense in the first inning. Junior Melissa O’Connor (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) reached on an error to lead off the game before Joseph roped a one-out RBI double, junior Maria Lisa Marciano (North Reading, Mass.) singled, and Pistorino boosted Saint Anselm to a 2-0 lead with an RBI fielder’s choice. McGrath added a two-out RBI double in the fifth.
The Purple Knights’ lone hits came off the bats of junior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) and senior Beth Murray (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady) on consecutive pitches leading off the second inning. Sophomore pitchers Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Kara Burrage (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) combined to allow six hits and one earned run while striking out one batter and walking none.
Saint Anselm continues its road trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at UMass Lowell. The Purple Knights return to action Sunday at noon in a double dip versus Southern New Hampshire University at Doc Jacobs Field.
