The Purple Knights won the opener, 2-0, to record their school record-tying ninth victory of the season, and dropped an 11-3 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, Roberge allowed just one walk while striking out nine in improving to 7-4 on the season. Her third strikeout of the contest, and 78th of the season, passed Kara McManus ’02 for the program’s single-season record.
Saint Michael’s (9-11, 3-7 NE-10) scored the only runs it would need in the third inning, as senior Beth Murray (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady) laced a one-out single and scored on junior Meagan Newland’s (E. Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) third home run of the season to left field. Murray singled twice and added a stolen base for the Purple Knights.
For Southern New Hampshire (11-9, 7-3), freshman Tara Moriarty (Randolph, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles. Classmate Ashley Smith (Franklin, N.H.) was the hard-luck loser, as she went the distance while striking out five.
The Penmen exacted revenge in game two, scoring four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to earn the split. Moriarty led a 14-hit attack with a home run and single, while junior Laura Cunningham (Penbroke, Mass.) ripped a two-run double and singled for SNHU. Senior Danielle Jendrasko (Portland, Maine) and freshman Felicia Brum (Briantree, Mass.) each singled twice, with Jendrasko scoring twice and knocking in two runs, while Mel Keeler (Concord, N.H.) earned the complete-game victory.
For the Purple Knights, junior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) knocked in all three runs with a two-run homer and a single. Murray, classmate Sara Pope (W. Springfield, Mass./W. Springfield) and freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each singled.
Saint Michael’s continues its grueling schedule on Tuesday, as the Purple Knights host league-rival University of Massachusetts Lowell in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
