ROBERGE, PURPLE KNIGHTS SPLIT WITH OWLS

Courtesy SCSU Sports Information Phone: (802) 654-2537NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jaime Johnson’s (Seymour, Conn.) second home run of the game was a two-run walk-off home run as Southern Connecticut (4-18, 3-7 NE-10) defeated St. Michael’s (8-10, 2-6 NE-10) in the second game of the doubleheader, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Field. In the opening game, the Purple Knights freshman pitcher Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) held the Owls to two hits and struck out six in an 8-0 shutout victory.
In the opener, the Purple Knights scored seven of their eight runs unearned. Freshman second baseman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) went 2-4 with two runs, sophomore shortstop Megan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) went 2-3, with two runs and two rbi and freshman first baseman Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) went 2-3. Sophomore Kelly Brenner (Meriden, Conn.) took the loss for the Owls and falls to 3-6.
In game two, the Owls broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third with three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman third baseman Lindsey Castano (Oakdale, Conn.) hit a rbi double and Johnson hit her first home run of the of the game a two-run blast. The Purple Knights cut it to 4-2 in the fifth on a Newland solo home run and tied it in the seventh on her second home run of the game, a two-run shot. In the doubleheader, Newland went 5-7, with two home runs, five rbi and four runs. Senior Katie Donovan (Winsted, Conn.) picked up her first victory of the season (1-7), going 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter, freshman Kristyna Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.). Roberge took the loss in relief and is now 6-4.
For the Owls in game two, Johnson went 3-4 with three runs scored and four rbi and Castano went 2-4 with an rbi.
The Owls travel to UMass Lowell on Monday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
Saint Michael's, which needs just one more win to match the single-season school record, hosts league-rival Southern New Hampshire in a doubleheader on Monday at 3 p.m.
