The Dolphins improve to 26-6 overall and 17-3 in league play, while the Purple Knights saw their three-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 16-16 overall, 10-12 in conference action.
In the opener, Le Moyne pounded out 13 hits, including three home runs, and cruised to a five-inning win. Senior Jessica Kirwan’s (Jamesville, N.Y.) grand slam in the second inning opened the scoring for the Dolphins, and freshman Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y.) gave the visitors a 6-0 lead in the third with a two-run blast. Junior Kristi Edmunds (E. Syracuse, N.Y.) homered and singled and sophomore Jennifer Winters (Vestal, N.Y.) added a double and a single as the bottom four hitters in the Dolphins’ lineup combined for eight hits and eight runs scored.
For the Purple Knights, freshmen Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) and Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each singled off Le Moyne starter Megan Vecchiano (E. Syracuse, N.Y.), who struck out five for the shutout.
In the nightcap, Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as sophomore Meagan Newland’s (E. Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) sacrifice fly plated senior Beth Murray (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady). The Dolphins took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the second, as the first three batters in the inning notched base hits off of Purple Knights’ starter Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union). Edmunds’ solo home run in the fourth gave the visitors a 3-1 lead, and two unearned runs in the sixth completed the scoring.
For the Dolphins, Spaziani singled twice, while sophomore Erin Phaneuf (Dracut, Mass.) fanned eight in a complete-game effort. Roberge suffered the loss despite throwing her 14th complete game of the season, notching nine strikeouts, while Currier led the offense with a double and single.
The Purple Knights play their final six NE-10 contests of the season on the road, beginning with Friday’s doubleheader at Assumption College. Saint Michael’s plays its last two home games of the season on April 29 versus non-conference rival Skidmore College.
