The Bulldogs defeated the Purple Knights in the second game 4-0, and lost the first game 3-2 in eight innings.
In Sunday’s opener, Bryant gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double by catcher Jordan Dargon (Trumbull, Conn.) that scored starting pitcher Nicole Keene (Auburn, Maine) from second.
A solo homerun by Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt.) in the top of the sixth tied the game at 1-1. Saint Michael’s took a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the seventh on a solo shot by Catherine Bourque (Gansevoort, N.Y.).
Bryant second baseman Carly Muise (Hanson, Mass.) was awarded first base to lead off the seventh inning when she was hit by a pitch. Muise moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Katie Kelley (Foxboro, Mass.) and advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Saint Michael’s starter Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt.). With two outs, Keene beat out a slow roller to Roberge that allowed Muise to score from third and force extra innings.
The Purple Knights scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on a two-out, bloop-single to left field by catcher Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn.) that scored right fielder Elizabeth Pigeon (St. Albans, Vt.).
In her final home game as a pitcher, Keene (10-6) pitched a complete game, eight-hitter and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out eight. Roberge also pitched a complete game to improve to 11-5, while allowing two runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Bryant took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Dargon and starting pitcher Diane Cummings (Westwood, Mass.). The Bulldogs made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Keene and took a 4-0 edge when Keene stole home following a walk by Dargon. Keene had five stolen bases in the game.
Cummings (7-4) pitched a complete game, four-hitter and earned her third shutout of the season.
Bryant returns to action on Tuesday, April 27th, when it travels to Manchester, N.H., to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
