COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) recorded a complete-game victory in the opener and a three-inning save in the nightcap as Saint Michael’s College recorded a pair of 2-1 wins versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley College in softball action on Sunday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights improve to 13-13 overall, adding to their school record win total, and 7-9 in the NE-10, while the Falcons drop to 7-19 and 4-10 in league play.

In game one, Roberge allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out eight to pass Mary Beth Sonski ’80 with her program-record ninth victory of the season. Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the second inning, as junior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) ripped a one-out triple to right-center (she later singled), and scored on senior third baseman Catherine Bourque’s (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) infield single. The Purple Knights doubled their lead in the third, as freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) singled and scored.

Bentley plated its lone run in the fourth on a leadoff double by senior Lauren Frasier (Somerville, Mass.) and a pair of sacrifices. Frasier also added a sixth-inning single. The Falcons had the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on second base with one out in the seventh, but Bourque threw out pinch-runner Meghan Hart (No. Brookfield, Mass.) attempting to score, then snared a line drive to end the contest.

In the nightcap, all the scoring took place in the first inning. Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead off Purple Knights’ starter Heather Chamberlin (Danville, Vt./Danville), as junior Jen Picardo (Medfield, Mass.) laced a one-out single down the left field line. Saint Michael’s responded with both its runs in the bottom of the frame, as Christmas’ two-run double plated senior Beth Murray (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady) and sophomore Meagan Newland (E. Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute).

The Falcons had several chances to pull even, as they left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings. Bentley left 13 runners on base in game two, including two in the seventh, as Roberge struck out the final two batters with the tying run just 60 feet away.

Sophomore Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief, striking out three. Brooks doubled and singled to lead a seven-hit attack.

Saint Michael’s completes its 10-game homestand on Monday as the Purple Knights host league-rival Merrimack College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
