FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team culminated its season-opening trip to Florida by knocking off both Buffalo State College and St. Thomas University on Friday at the 15th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Purple Knights return home with a 6-4 record, leaving them just three wins shy of tying the school record of nine set in 1979 and 2003.

A trio of Purple Knights each smacked three hits to lead the Purple Knights' 15-hit attack during an 8-3 win over Buffalo State (3-3) in Game 1. Junior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs, while freshmen Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) and Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each picked up three singles. Currier also drove in a run while Brooks scored twice. Sophomore Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) singled twice and scored a pair of runs, and freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) improved to 4-1 on the hill with five innings of relief.

In the second game, Christmas singled Brooks home in the top of the first inning for the game's only run as the Purple Knights defeated St. Thomas (8-12-1), 1-0. Sophomore Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) allowed only six singles while striking out one and walking none in 5-2/3 innings for the win. Roberge tossed the final 1-1/3 innings for the save. The game marked the Purple Knights' third shutout victory already this season, the most since the 2002 team picked up three of its five wins via a shutout.

Saint Michael's opens its 28-game Northeast-10 Conference slate on March 27 with a noon doubleheader at Pace University. The Purple Knights open their home schedule with noon doubleheaders against Saint Anselm College on April 3 and Southern New Hampshire University on April 4.
