CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Senior Catherine Bourque's (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) tie-breaking home run in the bottom of the fifth lifted the Saint Michael's College softball team to a 7-5 win over Grinnell (Iowa) College on Tuesday at the 15th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The win was the Purple Knights' (4-1) fourth in a row, their most since the 1981 season. The program previously existed from 1978-81 before being discontinued and re-established for the 1990 season.

Saint Michael's took a 3-1 lead after scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning, but Grinnell came back to tie the game at five in top of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two out in that inning, freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) came on to fan the final batter.

In the bottom of the inning, Bourque launched a solo shot with two down to give the Purple Knights the lead for good. Roberge pitched the final 2-1/3 innings of the game, improving to 3-0. She struck out four batters and has now K'd 31 batters in 16-1/3 innings. Freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) contributed three hits, including a triple.

The Purple Knights' final two games of the day, scheduled with Cardinal Stritch (Wisc.) University and Franklin Pierce College, were washed out by rain. Saint Michael's will take tomorrow off before playing a tripleheader on Thursday with Franklin Pierce at 11 a.m., Teikyo Post University at 3 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast University at 7 p.m. If they are able to sweep the three-game set, they would break the 1979 school record of six straight wins.
