By Josh Kessler '04 Phone: (802) 654-2537FORT MYERS, Fla. - Freshman Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) tossed a 12-strikeout no-hitter in her second collegiate start as the Saint Michael's College softball team improved to 3-1 with a pair of wins on Monday at the 15th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
In Game 1, sophomore Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched the Purple Knights to a 4-0 win over SUNY Potsdam. Jensen struck out five and walked three. Freshman Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) chipped in with an RBI double and senior Katie Healey (Niskayuna, N.Y./Nuskayuna) smacked a pair of hits. The shutout was the first for SMC since a 1-0 blanking of Assumption on April 14, 2002.
In the night cap, Roberge tossed her second gem in as many days, blanking Purdue University - North Central, 5-0. She walked only three batters as her teammates staked her to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In two games, Roberge has now struck out 27 batters in 14 innings while picking up two victories. Sophomore Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) contributed three hits and an RBI to the cause.
Roberge's no-hitter was the Purple Knights' first since Christine Cole '95 blanked Norwich University, 6-0, on Doc Jacobs Field on April 15, 1994.
The Purple Knights return to action tomorrow with a tripleheader against Grinnell (Iowa) College at 9 a.m., Cardinal Stritch (Wisc.) College at 11 a.m., and Franklin Pierce College at 1 p.m. They will rest on Wednesday before playing another tripleheader on Thursday and finishing up their 12-game Florida trip with a pair of Friday contests.
