FORY MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team began its season by splitting a pair of games Sunday at the 15th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic to open a 12-game Florida road trip. Freshman Meggan Roberge's (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) 15 strikeouts in the second game set a school record.

The Purple Knights fell to the College of Wooster (Ohio) in their season opener, 7-2. Sophomore Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) smacked an RBI double while freshman Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) doubled in her first collegiate at bat out of the leadoff spot in the first inning.

Roberge dominated Cardinal Stritch (Wisc.) University in Game 2, elevating the Purple Knights to a 3-2 victory. Junior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy), whose seven dingers in 2003 broke the program's single-season standard, launched a two-run homer to account for SMC's first runs of the game. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Michael's plated the game-winning run on an error.

In her first collegiate game, Roberge shattered the program's old single-game strikeout mark of 10. Kathy Stock '81 set the mark on May 2, 1979, against Lyndon State College before Kara McManus '02 tied the record against Stonehill College on April 24, 1999.
