MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Freshman Joe Young (Derry, N.H.) netted five goals and junior Davis Shields (Hampstead, N.H.) made 15 saves to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 13-12 victory over Saint Michael's College here today in men's lacrosse action.  SNHU improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Purple Knights dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.  It marked SNHU's first win over the Purple Knights since 1996, breaking a string of seven-straight losses.

The Purple Knights held a 5-1 lead after one quarter, but the Penmen scored the first four goals of the second quarter and tied the game at 5-5 following a goal by junior Josh Law (Liverpool, N.Y.) with 6:50 left before halftime.  Saint Michael's regained the lead off an unassisted goal by sophomore Eric Libby (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) with 4:17 left before the break, and the Purple Knight took a 7-5 lead into halftime.

Saint Michael's held an 8-6 lead late in the third quarter when the Penmen erupted for six unanswered goals.  Young's fourth goal of the game, an extra-man effort off a pass from junior Robert Gartmayer (Bethpage, N.Y.), capped the rally and gave SNHU a 12-8 lead with 8:19 left in the final quarter.  The Purple Knights would not go quietly, as they responded with three unanswered goals in the span of 1:01.  The Penmen took a 13-11 lead following Young's fifth goal of the game with 2:16 to play, before SMC cut the lead to one again after freshman junior Mike Curley (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) scored with 1:39 left.  The Purple Knights nearly sent the game into overtime, but Shields came up with a big save just before time expired.

Junior Dan Bierbower (Hopewell Valley, N.J.) totaled three goals and one assist for the Penmen, while Law finished with two goals and three assists and Gartmayer added two goals and two assists.  Sophomore Brandon Kobelt (New York, N.Y./Fordham Prep) paced the Purple Knights with a goal and four assists, while Curley and sophomore Brady Boyle (South Dennis, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) both scored three goals.

Junior Brian Hingston (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) stopped 19 shots for Saint Michael's.

The Purple Knights visit Merrimack on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting league-rival Bentley on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
